OIC Chief Iyad Madani
Jeddah (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani called for ceasefire in all Syrian territories on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
He made the call in order to stem bloodshed in Syria, alleviate the suffering and plight of Syrians, and make way for aid organizations to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the affected persons across the country.
Madani appealed to all parties as well as regional and international actors concerned with the Syrian crisis to support this appeal, and put pressure on the Syrian government and all warring parties to declare a truce that would halt all military operations across Syria, form the basis for a future permanent ceasefire and pave the way for the return of parties to peace negotiations, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace agreement to end the armed conflict in Syria.
The Secretary General added that the advent of the holy month is an important religious occasion with a sacred symbolism. It is also an occasion for renunciation of violence and reaffirmation of the tolerant values and principles of Islam, as a religion of mercy, cooperation and solidarity among Muslims, as well as the unity of the world and endeavor to resolve differences peacefully.
