Sultan of Oman Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said
Jeddah (UNA-OIC) – Omani Minister of Heritage and Culture Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said has succeeded Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, who passed away on Friday evening, as a new Sultan of Oman after he was sworn in on Saturday morning.
The Council of Oman held an emergency session at its headquarters in Al-Bustan, where the oath was performed, and the official inauguration ceremony began with the new Sultan's first public speech, in which he mourned the late Sultan Qaboos, and commended his accomplishments and activities in various fields to entrench the Sultanate's international position.
In his speech, Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq also confirmed moving forward on the noble approach of Sultan Qaboos in the development and progress of the Sultanate of Oman, saying: "We will follow the path of the late sultan."
Sultan Haitham, 65, affirmed Oman's commitment to maintaining the policy of non-intervention in the internal affairs of others, pledging to push forward the march of cooperation among the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). He further underscored the continued support of the Sultanate to the Arab League, in order to achieve its goals and to keep the region away from conflicts.
It is noteworthy that Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq had held several positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1986 and 2002 before becoming the minister of culture and heritage.
Sultan Qaboos Bin Said passed away at dawn on Saturday. Following his death, Oman’s Royal Court declared three days of mourning in the country where the flags will also be flown at half-mast for the next 40 days.
