Cairo (IINA) – The Muslim population of India is 180 million, according to Indian Deputy National Security Advisor Dr Arvind Gupta during a meeting held here on Tuesday with Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed El-Tayeb.
"The meeting reviewed the conditions of the Islamic world, especially the role of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in dealing with the course of variable events in the Muslim world," said a statement by Al-Azhar.
Sheikh el-Tayeb explained that Al-Azhar has a program designed to train foreign imams to deal with the contemporary challenges and to fight terrorism and ideological deviation, which both hurt individuals, communities and nations. He stressed Al-Azhar's readiness to cooperate with the Indian government in this domain.
For his part, the Indian official said: "Al-Azhar is an international institution, respected by the whole world, and we are interested to cooperate with it and to learn about its vision to counter extremism and terrorism".
Dr Gupta and his accompanying delegation visited Al-Azhar Observatory to familiarize themselves with the efforts made by this Islamic institution in fighting the terrorist group Daesh. He lauded the observatory's endeavors, as a real addition to the efforts of Al-Azhar to tackle extremism worldwide.
Al-Azhar online observatory, inaugurated on June 2, aims to monitor the erroneous ideas that terrorist groups promote on their websites in several languages, and prepare academic responses to educate young people about these destructive ideas.
